Charlie Starr shows Mark Agnesi his 1941 Gibson L-00—a fingerstyle workhorse that Mark Agnesi actually sold to Charlie while working at Norman’s Rare Guitars.

Fun fact: It still has the original strings from the day Mark sold him the guitar.

In this clip from The Collection, Blackberry Smoke’s Charlie Starr reunites with Mark Agnesi over a guitar Mark once sold him—a beautifully worn 1941 Gibson L-00 that has started to check gracefully and features a Firestripe pickguard. Played almost exclusively with fingers, never a pick, this guitar has lived a full life and sounds as resonant today as it did over 80 years ago.

Still strung with the same set of strings it had when Charlie bought it, this L-00 has become a go-to for open tunings and late-night inspiration. “They just won’t not sound good,” Charlie says. “It makes you play a certain way,” says Mark.

Packed with character and vintage charm—from the pronounced script logo to the worn-in headstock angles—this L-00 is more than just one of Charlie Starr’s favorite guitars; it’s essentially a time capsule from a time when guitars like this cost around $25.
