In this clip from The Collection on Gibson TV, Slash invites Mark Agnesi to talk about one of the rarest and most iconic guitars in his impressive guitar collection—a vintage, and very rare Gibson Flying V™ made of Korina, built in 1959.

NOTE: Slash refers to this guitar as a 1958 Flying V, but the serial number indicates it’s actually an even rarer 1959 model.

Originally acquired just before recording “Knockin’ on Heaven’s Door” during the Use Your Illusion sessions, this Flying V quickly became a secret weapon in Slash’s studio setup. As he recalls, the guitar was purchased through collector Albert Molinaro and was immediately put to use in the studio during the recording of the iconic Guns N’ Roses albums.

With its stripped pickup covers, aged finish, and undeniable “vibe,” this Flying V stands out as a tone monster when you listen to it on record. It’s also a true piece of Gibson history, considering it’s one of the rarest Gibson guitars in his collection. Slash remarks that it was “worth the price of admission,” even when its six-figure price tag made it one of the most expensive pieces he’d ever bought.

He also shares his thoughts on the Murphy Lab collection of Flying V guitars, calling them “amazing” and praising their craftsmanship. Although the original is rarely taken out today, when it does, it’s because Slash knows exactly what sound he wants, and as he puts it, only this guitar can deliver it.
