In this exclusive clip from The Collection, musical icon Peter Frampton and Gibson TV’s Mark Agnesi take a closer look at one of the most immaculate 1960 Les Paul™ Burst guitars you’ll probably ever find. As Mark puts it, it is a particularly “unfaded” cherry sunburst finish—possibly the most unfaded example he has ever seen on an original Burst. During the conversation, they note that the guitar may have had a small amount of overspray added at some point, which could explain the unusually vibrant red color that has remained so intact over the years. Its beauty stands out not just for its condition, but because Peter says this 1960 Les Paul is the guitar he reaches for when he wants a specific sound. High praise, considering Peter Frampton is well known for using his Gibson Les Paul Custom “Phenix.”

Frampton shares why this 1960 Gibson Les Paul holds such a special place in his heart, explaining that this exact guitar was originally J.J. Cale’s and used on nearly every track on 5, J.J. Cale’s fifth studio album, released in August 1979. He also explains that he feels this particular model is brighter than his Phenix Les Paul Custom, thanks in part to its maple top, which gives it a tone reminiscent of the famous Bluesbreakers-era Les Paul sound made iconic by Eric Clapton’s 1960 Les Paul he used with John Mayall & The Bluesbreakers. Did you know that while many associate that tone with a 1959 Les Paul, the guitar sound on the Bluesbreakers album was actually a 1960 Les Paul? Frampton also discusses why he prefers the comfortable neck profile of 1960 models, even basing the neck shape of his signature Gibson Custom model on a 1960 profile. And we also find out how he also likes to use this guitar on tracks such as “Lines On My Face” when playing live.
