Learn more about this incredibly rare Gibson 1959 Les Paul, which Mark says has a flawless top, learn about how it has been refretted by Joe Glaser, and is actually the guitar that inspired and served as the model for his Gibson Collector’s Choice release.

In this clip from The Collection, Aerosmith’s Brad Whitford presents a jaw-dropping 1959 Gibson Les Paul with a top that Mark calls “killer,” and it is part of a legendary group of five ’59s brought to Brad when Aerosmith was on tour to choose from to buy. This beautiful model is the one that spoke to Brad. “It was just the one that hit my ear,” he says. “I love the way it feels.”

This Les Paul was later refretted and Plek’d by Joe Glaser, which further improved its already exceptional playability. “They just did a great job,” Brad says. This very guitar became both the inspiration and the exact model used to create his Gibson Collector’s Choice run—a fan-favorite replica that captured its tone, top, and feel with remarkable accuracy.

Watch as Mark and Brad also discuss the history of the wood used to make these guitars, including speculation that the body wood dates back to the 1930s or 40s, which only adds to its mystique. In Mark’s words, “That is the good stuff... there’s a reason why everybody wants one like that.”
