In this clip taken from The Collection with Charlie Starr on Gibson TV, Charlie Starr, frontman of Blackberry Smoke, sits down with Mark Agnesi to tell the story of his trusty, battle-scarred 1956 Gibson Les Paul™ Junior, which is a guitar that’s been with him through smoky clubs, late night jams, studio sessions, and cross country tours.

Charlie tells how this guitar, originally owned by Rick Richards of The Georgia Satellites, ended up in his hands in the early 90s. Although the wood is from 1956, this Junior has lived several lives: refinished body, swapped-out pickup, two headstock breaks, and a road case full of stories. What started as a shiny black guitar turned into a raw, authentic, and soulful instrument, earning its scars through years of heavy playing.

Charlie reveals how he thought the pickup was original for years only to find out it was an aftermarket replacement and how the refinished body, headstock repairs, and handmade lettering became part of its soul. He also tells the story of how the misspelling of “Ya’ll” on the back of the guitar came to be. He explains why, even after playing pristine Juniors in professional studios, this specific guitar has a “thing” or a magic in the wood that no other guitar can replicate.
