In this clip from The Collection, Paul Stanley of KISS shares the story of his current ’59 Gibson Les Paul—a guitar that’s seen some work over the years, including a re-neck and a refinished top, but still holds its place as one of his favorite instruments. “It just needed some love,” Paul says.

Originally fitted with a Bigsby®, this Les Paul bears the telltale “snakebite” scars, something that Paul had no issue filling in to restore the guitar to what he wanted it to be. The top—blistery, peekaboo, as Mark calls it, and vibrant in a honey lemon burst—is exactly what Paul wanted. “The idea of everything having to be original is of no concern to me,” he explains. “If it looks great, it’s great.”

Once the owner of the iconic “Stanley Burst” featured on the cover of Beauty of the Burst, Paul has since let go of that guitar—but found everything he wanted again in this one. At the time of shooting, his guitars live together in a warehouse, but he remains clear: “I don’t want to store things away. I want to play them. I want to use them.”
