In this clip from The Collection with Slash, Slash and Mark Agnesi go back in time to the story behind one of the cleanest vintage guitars in Slash’s collection—a 1958 Gibson Les Paul™ Goldtop. Listen as Mark and Slash talk about the story of Slash’s search for a Gibson Goldtop to take out on the road with Guns N’ Roses. While Mark was working at Norman’s Rare Guitars, before he joined Gibson, he noticed this guitar was in the warehouse and made a call to Slash, who purchased it almost immediately after seeing it. This guitar would actually go on to feature in Norman’s book and was a particularly rare guitar find due to its near-pristine condition.

Listen as Mark tells the story of how Slash came into the store the day before he was heading out on tour with Guns N’ Roses and bought the guitar after a 10-minute visit.

Additionally, we also receive a brief history of the guitar, which is a 1958 Dark Back Goldtop with humbuckers™. If you’ve ever wondered whether or not the finish of a guitar changes the tone, well, Slash is inclined to agree as he notes that while it shares many features with a 1958 “Burst,” he feels Goldtops have a different tone.

Fun fact: This guitar is actually one of the Gibson Les Paul Goldtops that helped shape the reference point for his future signature models.
