One of only 81 ever made, the original 1958 Gibson Flying V™ is more than rare—it’s a holy grail when it comes to rare guitars that collectors search for. In a clip from an episode of The Collection, Buckcherry founding guitarist and producer Keith Nelson sits down with Mark Agnesi to share the story of the “Wing” ’58 Korina Flying V, a guitar that’s not just iconic in its own right but one of Keith’s first-call guitars when he wants a specific sound.

This very guitar was used during the recording of When Life Was Hard and Fast, the 2021 solo album by Ricky Warwick. Produced by Nelson in Los Angeles and co-written by him and Warwick, the album features harmony solos and key lead parts tracked with this V running through a Klon and into a Tweed Bandmaster and, panned hard left for that unmistakable bite. “It’s a whole other level of fidelity,” says Keith.

He breaks down why this Flying V stands apart from a Les Paul™ or SG™. “It’s got this honking midrange thing—a little fatter than an SG, a different kind of top end than a Les Paul. When I think of this guitar, I think Fandango. Get your Billy on.”

Having spent time with seven or eight of these original Vs, Mark Agnesi is no stranger to these extremely rare guitars and knows what makes them special. But this one? This one’s got a real vibe —and it just might have found its permanent home in Los Angeles with Keith in his already impressive collection of guitars.
