In this clip from The Collection, Metallica’s Kirk Hammett unveils one of the rarest guitars in his lineup—a factory black 1959 Gibson ES-335TD, housed in what he calls “The Monolith” case. Only a handful of these guitars are known to exist, and this one may even be the same guitar seen in a 1959 NAMM show photo, lurking behind a Flying V™ and a Les Paul™.

From its long pickguard, which warped into a “deadly barb,” to the mysterious factory markings labeling it both an ES-345 and an ES-335, this guitar is full of mystique. Watch as Kirk and Mark discuss how they believe it’s “rarer than a Korina V, rarer than a Burst,” how it’s become one of his most played and best-sounding guitars, and how Keith Richards is searching for one of these.

Kirk has taken it on stage, pushed it to stadium volumes with Metallica, and says it doesn’t feed back. With a massive sound that he describes as “like two guitars,” this ES-335TD is not only one of the best-sounding guitars in Kirk Hammett’s collection, it’s one of the rarest Gibson guitars in the world.
