In this clip from The Collection, Mark Agnesi sits down with KISS co-founder, guitarist, and songwriter Paul Stanley to talk about the guitar that started it all and the musical influences that set him on the path to becoming one of the most iconic frontmen of rock and roll.

Watch as Paul talks about seeing Eddie Cochran on television as a kid and how that moment sparked a lifelong connection to the guitar. Growing up surrounded by folk, bluegrass, classical music, and opera, Paul knew early on that the guitar was the instrument that spoke to him—and the one that would ultimately shape his musical identity.

He also shares the story of his very first guitar. Expecting an electric guitar for his 13th birthday, Paul instead discovered a used nylon-string guitar waiting under his bed. While it wasn’t the rock and roll machine he had hoped for, that guitar became the beginning of his musical journey, which would eventually lead him to become one of the most recognisable guitarists and frontmen in the world.

Paul also discusses his early lessons, why he quickly decided to teach himself, and the first electric guitar he owned, which he eventually upgraded to his first serious electric: a Gibson Les Paul SG purchased from a New York pawn shop for $120, a guitar that would mark his turning point into rock ’n’ roll.
