“Gibson has always been a part of my life, and Gibson is pretty much for me the standard that I was hoping to reach…”

What happens when one of rock’s most iconic frontmen designs the Flying V™ he always dreamed of? You get one of the most recognisable guitars ever to grace a stage. In this clip from The Collection from Gibson TV, Paul Stanley of KISS opens up his immense guitar collection and chats with Mark Agnesi to share the story behind his Flying V Custom—built to his exact specs by the team at the Gibson Custom Shop.

Designed for the End of the Road tour, Paul Stanley wanted a guitar that felt like a classic but never technically existed—a Flying V that was completely unique to his design. “I wanted something that felt classic and maybe a guitar that never existed,” Paul explains, setting the tone for what would become a standout instrument in his collection and instantly recognisable onstage. This custom-built Flying V Custom features upgraded hardware, a modified Starchild tailpiece, a relocated input jack for on-stage practicality, a contoured belly cut for comfort, and thick frets to help Paul play those KISS hits every night onstage. It’s the kind of guitar that only the KISS frontman could design, and it’s easily one of the best guitars in his collection.

Paul explains how elements like the binding were inspired by Albert King’s “Lucy,” and how he tweaked everything from pickup choices to hardware placement to make sure it was playable based on the demands of his band, KISS, every night. Finished with the Starchild emblem and road-worn from tour use, it’s a guitar that bridges the glam and grit of rock ’n’ roll and is one any KISS fan will instantly recognise if you saw them on their final tour.

For fans of KISS, custom-made Gibson guitars, and Gibson Flying Vs, you’re going to love the story behind one of Paul Stanley’s most iconic, stage-used guitars.
