In this clip from The Collection, Slash shares the acoustic guitar that marked the beginning of his journey as a musician—a 1970s Epiphone that, he said, was his first brand-name acoustic. It’s hard to imagine this hard rocker babysitting as a job, but he was just 16 when a couple he babysat for surprised him with the gift after he spent the night playing it after he spotted it hanging on their wall. “They gave it to me, and it was like a godsend,” Slash recalls.

Though the tailpiece later pulled away from the body—now held in place by a few bolts—the guitar has stayed intact for decades. “It’s held up all these years,” he notes. More than just a guitar, this Epiphone represents a pivotal moment in Slash’s early life and music in general. We may not have had the Slash guitarist we know if it wasn’t for this guitar.

“This is the only thing I have from that long ago,” he says—making this humble acoustic one of the most poignant guitars in his immense collection.
