Did you know Slash made one very specific change to his 2020 Les Paul Custom guitar?

In this clip from The Collection on Gibson TV, Slash chats with Mark Agnesi about one of his most unique touring guitars in the form of a Gibson Custom 2020 Gibson Les Paul Custom featuring a rosewood fingerboard, which is quite unusual for these guitars, as they usually have an ebony fingerboard.

Slash explains that while he loves the look and feel of Les Paul Custom guitars, their traditional ebony fingerboards tend to sound too bright for his style. That led him to the idea of working with the Gibson Custom Shop to create a version with a rosewood fingerboard, delivering a warmer, more balanced tone while keeping the iconic aesthetic.

Watch as Slash breaks down how this guitar came to life, why he made two of them, and how he’s used them on tour with Myles Kennedy and the Conspirators, as well as Guns N’ Roses.

He also compares this build to his original “Black Beauty” Les Paul Custom guitars, which he has used in the studio, including during the Use Your Illusion sessions, and explains why they’re better suited for brighter, more top-end tones. He also notes that one of these guitars was used for the “Sympathy for the Devil” solo, as played by Keith Richards of The Rolling Stones, calling it one of the all-time “worst-best” guitar sounds.
