In this compilation from the Joe Bonamassa episode of Gibson TV’s The Collection, Mark Agnesi visits Nerdville East to check out five incredible vintage Les Paul™ guitars and hear the stories behind them.
Joe starts with “Lazarus,” a 1959 Gibson Les Paul Standard that spent more than 50 years hidden underneath candy apple red paint. After spotting the original parts and key details underneath the finish, Joe realized he had found an original 1959 Les Paul. The guitar was restored to its Sunburst finish and brought back to life.
Next up is “Johnny B,” a late-1960 Gibson Les Paul Standard that still has its former owner’s name attached to the body. Joe talks about why he loves guitars with names on them, the slim 1960 neck profile, and why this road-worn Les Paul has become such a dependable touring guitar.
Joe then shows Mark “The Ragin’ Cajun,” a 1960 Gibson Les Paul Standard he found in New Orleans. After buying it, Joe and Mike Hickey discovered a photo of the exact guitar in a vintage guitar book. When they removed the replacement pickup covers, they found the original double-white Patent Applied For pickups underneath. Joe went on to play the guitar at every show for three years.
We also get a closer look at “Lorelei,” a 1959 Gibson Les Paul Standard previously owned by Craig Chaquico of Jefferson Starship. Joe shares the story behind the guitar, its faded finish, rock ’n’ roll history, and distinctive zebra and double-white pickups.
Finally, Joe brings out a 1958 Gibson Les Paul Custom that inspired his Epiphone signature model. He explains the changes that made it a better playing guitar, including a refret and a flipped pickup magnet, before pointing out one of its coolest details: original Epiphone tuners with altered logos.
From refinished Bursts to iconic guitars with incredible stories, Joe Bonamassa shows Mark Agnesi five of his favorite Les Paul guitars from Nerdville East.
If you love vintage Gibson guitars, rare Les Pauls, and incredible guitar stories, this compilation from The Collection is one you don’t want to miss.
