John 5 reveals how close he came to making music with Prince after receiving an unexpected phone call from the legendary artist during recording sessions for Marilyn Manson’s album Holy Wood (In the Shadow of the Valley of Death).

After Prince’s guitar tech recommended John 5, he was warned to keep an eye out for a Minneapolis number. Sure enough, the call came while John was in the studio tracking guitars.

Prince invited him to Paisley Park to work together, but John had only just started the record and couldn’t simply leave the sessions. He told Prince he’d come as soon as he had a break.

The call never came again.

As John explains, that’s why Prince is still the artist he wishes he could have made a record with: “I was almost there.”
