In this clip from Through The Lens, acclaimed Hollywood, music, advertising, and fashion photographer Timothy White shares the incredible story behind one of the most memorable Eddie Van Halen photo shoots of his career…the time he set Eddie Van Halen’s hands on fire.
As a photographer shooting for Rolling Stone, Timothy was always searching for a concept that would stand out on a newsstand while still maintaining artistic integrity. During a Monsters of Rock cover shoot, he devised elaborate visual concepts for the band Van Halen, including custom-made contact lenses that transformed the musicians into larger-than-life characters. But for Eddie Van Halen, Timothy wanted something even more dramatic.
Growing up idolizing guitar heroes like Eric Clapton and Eddie Van Halen himself, rock photographer and fan Timothy saw Eddie as the defining guitarist of the moment. Everyone knows that Eddie was an innovative player whose speed, energy, and style felt completely unique, so how could he capture that? Looking for a way to capture that intensity in a single image, he came up with a bold idea: what if Eddie played so fast that his hands literally burst into flames?
With the help of a special effects expert and professional stunt safety techniques, Timothy brought the concept to life for real. Using protective gel and controlled effects, Eddie’s hands were set on fire while Timothy captured long-exposure photographs designed to visualize the speed and ferocity of his playing. It was a high-risk creative gamble that produced an unforgettable and iconic image of Eddie Van Halen and remains one of Timothy’s coolest stories from photographing the band and his incredible career capturing iconic moments of bands.
Through The Lens is a Gibson TV original series that explores the untold stories behind some of music’s most legendary images, told by the photographers who captured them.
