How did Tony Iommi become the SG man? In this clip from the Conversation with Judas Priest’s Richie Faulkner, Tony tells the story of how he first got a Gibson SG™, how it became his main guitar, and the strange circumstances that led him to switch from his original Stratocaster®.
Iommi recalls how, before recording Black Sabbath’s debut album, he originally had a right-handed Gibson SG as a backup guitar that he played upside down and restrung to suit his left-handed playing. However, after hearing about another musician who played a left-handed guitar upside down, he arranged a swap—trading his right-handed SG for a more suitable left-handed one. Iommi recalls how while recording the first Black Sabbath album, specifically the song “Wicked World,” his Strat pickup failed during the session, and he had to use his backup guitar; having no choice, he had to rely on the SG. It was the first time he’d properly used it in a serious session, but from that moment, he never looked back.
From that day on, the SG became Iommi’s main instrument, shaping the heavy, dark, and iconic riffs that define Black Sabbath’s sound. Over the decades, his association with the SG grew and inspired generations of metal and rock guitarists. In this interview with Richie Faulkner, he talks about that moment and how a twist of fate led to one of the most famous partnerships in rock history–Tony Iommi and the Gibson SG.
