Crucial steps:
1. Say the names of the notes as you play them.
2. Do these exercises in the morning and at night.
3. Set aside just 5-10 minutes each session.

Exercises:
1. Talk your way horizontally up and down each string.
2. Find the octaves.
3. Go vertically across your fretboard in columns.

Scales, chords, arpeggios, licks... everything will be much easier to learn and recall once you know the notes of the fretboard.
