Jerry Cantrell on Dimebag Darrell’s "otherworldly" talent on guitar

Jerry Cantrell reflects on meeting Dimebag Darrell in a Houston club in 1985 and how he, Dimebag, and Vinnie Paul became solid friends.

In this clip from ICONS, Alice In Chains’ Jerry Cantrell shares a personal story about meeting Dimebag Darrell for the first time at a Texas club in 1985, years before Pantera dominated the metal scene. At just 18 years old, both musicians were already playing gigs and shredding clubs nightly, but when Jerry saw Dimebag, he had immense respect for him as a guitarist. “I remember after that show going up to him and introducing myself,” Jerry says. “His tone was just otherworldly.”
Jerry talks about spending nights at rock clubs like Matley’s in Dallas and Cardi’s in Houston, soaking up live music and becoming part of the music scene. That night in Houston, he caught Pantera—then fronted by Terry Glaze—and struck up a conversation with Dime about guitars and their shared admiration of Eddie Van Halen. A conversation that would spark one of the most meaningful friendships of his career.

“Dime is one of those guys... there’s really nobody like him,” Jerry says. “He had another worldly thing, and he was just a great dude. One of my best friends in this life of pirate ship rock and roll.”
