When to Use Grace Notes in a Solo, and When to Hold Back

Learn how to add simple grace notes to a D major scale, using slides, hammer-ons and chromatic pull-offs, so your solos sound more musical and more interesting.

Steve Stine starts with a D major scale and shows how to slide into a note from the note just before it. You'll see that the note you slide from doesn't have to be part of the scale, like the B-flat in front of B, and that you can use half-step slides, full-step slides or hammer-ons.

He also shows a chromatic pull-off idea: play a note, let it hang for a moment, then drop into the next one. Finally, Steve explains when this style works well, when it doesn't, and how to practice it without overusing it.
