Rex Brown of Pantera talks about the historical Monsters of Rock festival in Moscow, playing for 1.6 million people.
Pantera’s rise from Texas bar band to heavy metal legends is the stuff of rock history—and few moments capture it better than their unforgettable set at the 1991 Monsters of Rock Festival in Moscow.
In this exclusive clip from ICONS on Gibson TV, bassist Rex Brown recalls how Pantera went from opening for Suicidal Tendencies in small clubs to playing one of the largest concerts in history. He reflects on life on the road, supporting Judas Priest, recording Vulgar Display of Power, and then getting the life-changing call to play in front of hundreds of thousands of fans in Moscow—just days after the fall of the Soviet Union.
Rex remembers walking onto the stage and being overwhelmed by the sheer scale of it all, saying he had “never seen so many people in my entire life. I’ve been to big events. I’m from Texas. You know, Cotton Bowl, Stones… this was insane.” When Pantera finally hit the stage, the energy and nerves pushed them to their limits. “We got out there and gave them the best that we could possibly do. I was on my last dying breath when that last note was played.”
Looking back, Rex sees that performance as more than just another show—it was the moment Pantera defined themselves. As he puts it, “That is the quintessential Pantera right there. That show in itself caught on tape.”
Discover more about Rex Brown’s journey, the legacy of Pantera, and how a bar band from Texas became one of the heaviest forces in metal in the full ICONS episode on Gibson TV.
