In this guitar lesson, Steve Stine discusses the "minor pentatonic" scale, which is a great scale to begin learning how to "solo" or "jam" for a few different reasons:
1. It's easier to play than many other scales
2. It's easier to memorize than many other scales
3. There aren't any "wrong notes"
4. It sounds great with most styles of music.
Now, is this the only choice? Certainly not, there are many scales and channels of learning you can choose, but the pentatonic tends to serve as a fun and cool sounding scale with multiple functions.
