Train Your Ear by Learning "Happy Birthday" on One String

Most players learn a melody in one spot on the fretboard and stop there — which means the second someone asks you to play it in a different key or a different position, you're lost. This lesson is about training your ear to hear distances between notes so you're not locked into one shape.

I use "Happy Birthday" as the example, since everyone already knows how it's supposed to sound. I play it once, starting on the 5th fret of the third string, staying within frets 5 to 8 the whole time — and the challenge is figuring it out by ear before watching how I did it.

From there, two things matter: first, using the last note you land on to
figure out what key you're actually in (your ear tells you where "home" is long before you think about theory). Second — and this is the real point of the lesson — taking that same melody and finding it again on a single string, spanning the full length of the neck instead of staying boxed into one position.

If you don't know your scales yet, don't worry about that part. Focus on the ear training first — once you can hear a melody in one spot, you can find it anywhere.
