As Rex Brown, bass player and founding member of Pantera, puts it, the band never went backward. “Yesterday doesn’t mean anything,” he says, and the only measure that ever counted was whether the next record beat the one they had just made. That mindset is exactly what produced arguably the heaviest, most experimental album in the band’s catalog.

In this exclusive clip from ICONS on Gibson TV, bassist Rex Brown reflects on the making of Far Beyond Driven, the recording sessions that shaped it, and the subsequent tours to support it. He talks about chasing a bass sound big enough to survive a mix where the drums and guitars had to be the loudest thing in the room, and about a band six months deep into a record with nothing on their minds except making each riff harder than the ones on the last album.

Fans of Pantera will note that this is the album where the whammy pedal started to be part of Dimebag’s sound, and Rex picked up the five-string bass. “So everything just kept getting bigger and cooler,” Rex remembers, describing writing days where Phil Anselmo would sometimes stay away entirely while the rest of the band experimented and wondered whether he would dig what they had built. Good Friends and a Bottle of Pills came out of exactly that process, and it pointed straight at where Pantera went next.

Then there was the machine. Before the record even hit shelves, Warner handed the band a jet and sent them through eighteen cities in eleven days, two or three stores a day, two and three thousand kids at each one. “They knew what they had,” Rex says. “They put the guns behind it.” This is the story of Pantera at the height of their commercial push and their most experimental.
