Pepper talks about how the track was inspired by Thin Lizzy and explains how Lynyrd Skynyrd’s “Sweet Home Alabama” sparked a songwriting challenge: could they write a heavy rock song using only 3 chords that never change? The answer was “Clean My Wounds”—same chords, same progression, verse to chorus. Only the vocal melody changed.

In this clip from the full episode of Riff Lords, you’ll learn to play “Clean My Wounds” as Pepper plays the riff at full and slow speed and shows you exactly how he gets that “wiggle verb” sound with a cool single string trick. He explains how on the original recording, “we did three tracks of individual strings, every note was a single note, and we created the chord...so that’s why it sounds so freaking crazy.”

They tracked every string separately to build the sound, creating a layered, “wiggle-verb” effect, and he says it took them “a week in the studio to figure that out.” Pepper credits producer John Custer for wanting to “put a stamp on it” and notes that fellow guitarist Woody Weatherman “had to hit each one of them.”

It’s a song that sounds huge—and its secret was holding back. “It was so restrained and pulled back and simple, but still it worked.”
