Ever wondered how to play 3 Libras by A Perfect Circle correctly? In this exclusive clip from Riff Lords, Billy Howerdel breaks down one of the standout tracks from A Perfect Circle’s debut album, Mer de Noms, showing exactly how the guitar part works both with and without the effects that help define one of the most iconic songs of the noughties.

Billy explains that the inspiration for 3 Libras began while trying to work out how to play Blue Öyster Cult’s Don’t Fear the Reaper, landing on a delay sound at the same tempo. That delay stayed, eventually helping shape the rhythm and feel of 3 Libras.

In this 3 Libras guitar lesson, Billy first plays the part slowed down with no effects, making it easier to hear what’s happening underneath the delay. He explains how much of the part revolves around two held notes, giving it that signature droning sound.

Billy then breaks down the fingerpicking pattern, explaining that he keeps a pick in hand while using his ring finger to play the B string. The main shape uses the third fret on the A string and the third fret on the B string, then slides up the neck from the third fret to the seventh and tenth frets, with another move up to the eighth fret.

He also demonstrates the open G string within the picking pattern, the changes used through the verse, and how the shapes move while maintaining the flow. Billy then plays 3 Libras clean at half speed, before finishing with the full-speed version, complete with effects so you can hear what it sounds like wet/dry.
