John 5 tells the wild story of how a cold call eventually led to him making the DLR Band album with David Lee Roth and becoming friends with the iconic Van Halen frontman.

After finding a contact number in Roth’s book, John 5 took a chance and asked if he was looking for songs. That led to him recording three tracks, then three more, before he was invited to David Lee Roth’s house, which eventually led to him recording guitars for the DLR Band, the fifth full-length studio album by David Lee Roth.

John 5 recalls meeting one of his heroes, seeing the famous “Panama” car and motorcycle, and being told they were going to make the record just like the Van Halen days—live, fast, and with very few takes, leaving almost zero room for a mistake!

The catch was: with John already rehearsing with Rob Halford, Roth scheduled the sessions for 6:00 a.m. and gave him one rule: “If you can’t do it in two takes, you can’t do it.”
