Hybrid Picking Explained Through a Blues Lick

Hybrid picking and inside/outside picking are two ideas that quietly separate players who move around the fretboard smoothly from players who don't — and in this lesson I break down two blues licks that use them.

The first lick lives in A minor pentatonic and uses hybrid picking: your
guitar pick handles the higher strings, and your middle finger picks the
lower ones, letting you move between strings without jumping your pick hand back and forth. It's a technique a lot of country and blues players lean on because it makes fast string-crossing feel more fluid.

The second lick is built around a repeating four-note pattern that climbs
down the neck, and it's where inside picking and outside picking actually
matter. Inside picking means staying between two strings (down-pick the lower one, up-pick the higher one); outside picking is the reverse. At a slow tempo, none of this matters — you can pick it any way you want. But as the tempo increases, picking direction stops being a preference and starts being the thing that makes the lick actually work.

Neither lick has to be played exactly the way I play it. Take the parts that
are useful to you — the picking technique, the pattern, or just the position — and leave the rest.
