How to tune a guitar by ear using three different methods. In this beginner guitar lesson from Philadelphia guitar instructor Rob Swift, you will learn how to tune your electric or acoustic guitar by ear using pitch matching across all six strings of the instrument, and also by using harmonics. The practice of using harmonics for tuning has one main benefit, the ability to hear both tones ring out simultaneously, which may allow you to tune more accurately. Practice tuning your guitar using all three methods, many times in conjunction with one another. Please note that in order to properly tune, your guitar must have accurate intonation, which means that your instruments setup allows the fretted notes to resonate at the desired pitches. If you tune your guitar and it still sounds out of tune when strumming chords, you need to have your instrument adjusted by a professional. Tuning your guitar takes practice, but becomes second nature over the course of several practice sessions. Let's get started!
