How Patterns and Sequences Add Instant Energy to Your Solos

Learn how to turn a single repetitive lick into a full sequencing pattern that adds instant energy and movement to your solos — no matter what scale or position you're playing in.

In this lesson, Steve Stine breaks down how patterns (or sequences — the terms are interchangeable) work: take a short repetitive idea, then move it across the fretboard horizontally or vertically. It works in any scale, key, or position. Steve walks through building a sequence in the A minor pentatonic position, adjusting it with a pull-off for a smoother sound, and demonstrates a four-note grouping approach in more of an Eric Johnson style. He also covers when it's okay to bend the rules of a scale slightly to make a pattern easier to execute, then moves into applying the same sequencing concepts to the G major (diatonic) scale, including playing a sequence forward, backward, and shifting it both horizontally and vertically across the neck.

You don't have to play these as fast as possible or use the entire sequence every time — Steve shows how picking just part of a pattern, or using it in a more rhythmic sense, can work just as well. If you've never thought about sequencing before, this is a solid starting point for adding more movement and interest to your playing.
