Not every note you play has to belong to the chord underneath it — and
knowing when to step outside the triad is what turns a scale run into an
actual phrase.
I break down what non-chord tones actually do for you: they create tension,
they create suspension (that "almost home" feeling right before you land back
on a chord tone), and they let you move around the fretboard instead of
staying locked into one shape. I walk through some live improvising to show
what this sounds like in practice — building a phrase out from a center
instead of just running up and down a scale.
The part that matters most isn't memorizing which notes are "allowed." It's
being aware enough of the chord underneath you that you can choose when to
connect back to it and when to keep the energy going without forcing a
resolution. You don't have to touch every chord tone every time — but you
also can't ignore them completely, or it just sounds wrong.
