How I Stay Organized Playing in Multiple Bands at Once

Playing in one band is one thing. Playing in four or five different bands in the same week — each with its own setlist — is a completely different challenge. Here's the system I actually use to keep it all straight.

Step one: I build a Spotify playlist for every gig coming up, so I can listen to the songs in the car or around the house and start flagging the parts that feel tricky before I even pick up the guitar.

Step two: instead of trying to read a full tab or chord chart live, I make my own cheat sheets — just the parts I actually forget, with little cues like "solo in D minor" or "play clean" next to the section. A full chart is too much to follow while you're also trying to make eye contact with the band and have fun.

All of those charts go into an iPad using an app called forScore, with a MIDI pedal to turn pages hands-free. I also record myself once I've got a song down and save it to Google Drive, so I can watch it back months later when a gig comes back around and I've forgotten the details.

And for bands that don't rehearse — where you're expected to know the song but adapt live to their own arrangement — no chart replaces actually listening and watching for the cues in the moment.
