How I Put Together a Remote Music Collaboration, Step by Step

Ever wanted to collaborate on a song with musicians who don't live anywhere
near you? Here's the exact process I use, start to finish, using a simple
cover of "Help" as the example.

Step one is always the same: listen to the song, figure out the key and the
chords (Ultimate Guitar is my go-to for chord charts), and settle on a tempo.
This version stayed in the same key as the original — A — and I built it
around 225 BPM.

From there I create a scratch drum track in EZdrummer 3, just enough to mark
the verses, chorus, and breaks, then record raw guitar tracks over it while
singing the song in my head to keep everything locked in. That raw track is
what goes out to everyone else — bass player, drummer, singer — so we're all
playing to the same tempo.

The part people usually don't think about: once the drummer wants to record
his own part, he doesn't want my scratch drums in the way. So I build him a
separate mix — click track in one ear, guitar in the other — so he can create
something original instead of copying what I did.

If you want to try this with your own friends: start with something simple.
Save the complicated time-signature stuff for once you understand the process.
