Guitar Tapping in 5 Minutes: The Basics Explained

Tapping looks intimidating until you break down what your hands are actually
doing — and once you get the motion, you can start applying it to any scale.
Here's the whole technique in under 6 minutes.

I start simple: fret the 7th fret of the third string, then tap the 12th fret
with your other hand. The two things that make or break clean tapping are
muting — lightly touching the strings around the one you're playing so nothing
else rings out — and control over your distortion, since too much turns any
mistake into noise.

From there I build it up: adding more notes from the pentatonic scale, mixing
in hammer-ons and pull-offs, changing the order of the notes, and moving your
fretting hand to a new position mid-lick. The move always happens while the
tap is down — that's the timing trick that makes it feel smooth instead of
sloppy.

Start slow. Get comfortable with one idea before you add the next.
