Understanding the major diatonic (7-note) scale is the key to understanding the rest of music theory.
Something to remember: no matter what key you're in, the intervals between the notes on the major diatonic scale are ALWAYS the same.
Which means, you can play the same scale shapes with different keys... you just have to move them up or down the fretboard.
