Most guitar players try to play fast using their slow picking technique.

Here are the 3 steps to that will rapidly improve your picking speed and technique:

STEP 1:

You actually have to learn your fast picking technique. Do this by trying to play as fast as possible and see what your picking hand does to achieve this. Don't worry about accuracy at this point. You're just trying to see what it feels like to play fast.

STEP 2:

Take that fast picking technique and slow it wayyyy down. Now you know what your picking technique should feel like at a slow speed.

STEP 3:

Using a metronome, practice using this new technique at a slow tempo...say 60 bpm. Just do alternate picking on one string to start out. Once you feel comfortable, increase the speed by 5 bpm until you hit a wall. Then back it down to a comfortable level and increase 1 bpm at a time.

Some of my students I have shown this to have been able to blow past their prior tempo barriers in as little as 3-5 days practicing this technique.
