In this guitar lesson, Steve Stine discusses the importance of using a "static" jam track to explore the tonal relationships between the scale you are exploring and the chord you are playing over.

The nice thing about using a "static chord" with no tempo or groove when practicing is that it gives you the freedom to explore the relationship between the chord and the notes of the scale without having to worry about tempo, groove, chord changes, etc.

While these things are very important to practice, we often bypass the exploration of a scall from a "creative" standpoint, and simply focus on technique.

With this way of practicing, you can go at any pace, in any position, with any relevant scale, and truly listen to the sounds and interactions of that particular scale over the chord that's being played.

Also, you can compare different scales or modes, and see which pitches are "chord tones" and which pitches are not, and how they sound when you emphasize them.
