Dave Mustaine explains that the difference between Countdown to Extinction and the records that came before it was, first and foremost, the tempo. Many of the songs on Countdown began to adopt more of a heavy metal tempo, with some even venturing into rock territory. This shift became increasingly evident over time. When discussing Youthanasia, Mustaine recalls a key insight from producer Max Norman, who revealed that the tempos for the album were intentionally kept within a specific range. Norman believed that 120 beats per minute was the "secret tempo" for radio songs, and this approach played a significant role in shaping the album's sound and appeal.
