Claudio Sanchez of Coheed and Cambria shares the story behind the first song he ever wrote and explains how he taught himself to play guitar without learning to read music.

In this clip taken from GTV’s Riff Lords with Claudio Sanchez of Coheed and Cambria, Claudio tells us how his musical journey started and even shows us the very first song he ever wrote on guitar. Long before Coheed and Cambria’s iconic sci-fi concept albums and intricate riffs would become so recognizable in the world of music, Claudio was simply a kid with a guitar in the house with a desire to start writing his own songs.

Claudio explains how he originally learned to play by studying chord charts in the Fake Books series rather than reading traditional music notation. He recognizes the importance of music theory, but emphasizes that creativity and imagination can be just as important when starting out as a songwriter.

For Claudio, songwriting has always been about following inspiration and creating without worrying too much about rules. That mindset would eventually lead to the unique storytelling and musical world that defines Coheed and Cambria today.
