Fingerstyle is one of the most popular styles of acoustic guitar playing. In this lesson, we’ll take a look at six exercises that will help you build coordination and dexterity for fingerstyle guitar. If you spend a little time each day working through this material, you’ll develop the muscle memory required to easily learn new fingerpicking patterns.
To start, we’ll keep it simple: focus on nailing down the thumb technique. Choose either the E string or the A string and practice using your thumb to pick the string. Once you get the hang of it, you can alternate between the E string and A string to build up some accuracy and coordination.
As you progress through this lesson, the guitar exercises will get more and more complex. Take your time, and don’t feel like you need to move through everything at once. It may take you a few weeks or months to master the exercises. But once you’ve got them down, you’ll be ready to tackle just about any fingerpicking pattern you want to learn.
