Aeolian vs. Dorian: One Note That Changes Everything

Aeolian and Dorian share almost every note — but the one note that's
different completely changes how a scale feels. Here's how to actually hear the difference and know when to use each one.

Start with the natural minor scale (Aeolian) — no sharps, no flats, in the
key of A minor. Dorian is the exact same scale with one change: the sixth degree moves up a half step, from a minor sixth to a major sixth. That single note is what gives Dorian its brighter, bluesier edge, while Aeolian stays dark and sad-sounding.

Both are really just your minor pentatonic with two extra notes added, which means you don't need to understand modal theory deeply to use them — you just need to know which mood you're going for. Want something that sounds real minor, real dark — metal, a Black Sabbath-style riff — go Aeolian. Want more of a bluesy, rock and roll lift — an AC/DC-style vibe — go Dorian.

You won't always have time to analyze a song in the moment, but picking one of these two by ear is right almost every time.
