A Blues Lick That Shifts Frets While One Note Stays Put

GET THE PDF: http://guitar-zoom.s3.amazonaws.com/NewClubs/Blues/month-21/cool-blues-trick-lick.pdf
GET THE JAM TRACK: https://jamtracks.s3.amazonaws.com/blues-club-jamtracks/month21/Blues_Straight_in_A_100bpm.wav

Here's a fun blues lick that combines major and minor pentatonic in the same phrase — played in the key of A to keep things simple.

The shape starts on frets 5, 7, and 8 across the first and second strings. The trick is that the 5 stays put while the 7 and 8 shift up one fret at a time, creating a moving three-note pattern you can repeat as many times as you want before shifting again. Add a pull-off at the end and it becomes a four-note sequence instead — both work, and which one you use is really just a feel choice.

I also break down the picking side, which is what actually makes this lick sound clean: instead of picking each note separately, you push through both strings almost like strumming a chord, using your index finger to mute the second string the instant you leave it.

At the end I play it over a jam track so you can hear how a group of three notes sounds layered over a straight four-beat rhythm — that little rhythmic clash is what makes the lick interesting to a listener's ear.

TIMESTAMPS:
0:00 The lick: major and minor pentatonic combined
1:08 Playing the basic shape (frets 5, 7, 8)
1:38 Shifting the pattern up one fret
3:03 Turning it into a 4-note sequence with a pull-off
3:42 Picking technique: pushing through like a strum
7:08 Making it your own (3s vs. 4s)
7:59 Playing it over the jam track

How Non-Chord Tones Create Tension and Release in a Solo

Not every note you play has to belong to the chord underneath it — and
knowing when to step outside the triad is what turns a scale run into an
actual phrase.

I break down what non-chord tones actually do for you: they create tension,
they create suspension (that "almost home" feeling right before you land back
on a chord tone), and they let you move around the fretboard instead of
staying locked into one shape. I walk through some live improvising to show
what this sounds like in practice — building a phrase out from a center
instead of just running up and down a scale.

The part that matters most isn't memorizing which notes are "allowed." It's
being aware enough of the chord underneath you that you can choose when to
connect back to it and when to keep the energy going without forcing a
resolution. You don't have to touch every chord tone every time — but you
also can't ignore them completely, or it just sounds wrong.

0:00 What non-chord tones actually do (tension and suspension)
1:27 Using non-chord tones to move around the fretboard
2:45 A live example: connecting G, A minor, and C
3:49 Building a phrase instead of just playing notes
