Watch guitarist Molly Miller show you how to play the riff from “Over the Fence,” taken from the Molly Miller Trio album St. George.

In this clip from Riff Lords, Molly joins us at GTV to break down the tension-building guitar riff from “Over the Fence.” Originally improvised during the song’s solo section, it’s played entirely over a G minor chord.

In this Molly Miller guitar lesson, Molly shows you how to create a melody using notes from a G minor chord while adding G minor 9 and G minor 6 colors. Watch how she explains how playing on the upbeats and moving a chord voicing down by a half step creates tension before resolving, and learn the difference between hybrid picking and using a pick before she walks you through the pull-offs, hammer-ons, chord voicings, and pinky work needed to play the complete riff.

As Molly explains, the riff helps take the song “from a simmer” to “a light boil,” gradually building towards the climactic moment of the G minor solo section. If you want to learn how to make intricate solo voicings from chords, this is a really great guitar lesson for you.
Did you know one of Slash’s main Velvet Revolver guitars was actually from the first full-production run of the Slash line of signature model Les Paul guitars?

In this clip from The Collection on Gibson TV, Slash chats with Mark Agnesi about an early-2000s Gibson Les Paul Standard in Tobacco Burst, made by the team at the Custom Shop. Slash explains that it came from the first real run of Slash models, circa 2000 to 2002 (although he is not quite sure).

The guitar originally featured a piezo pickup in the bridge and a switch that allowed Slash to move quickly to an acoustic-style sound. This gave him a practical alternative to using a double-neck guitar when performing songs that required both electric and acoustic tones.

Slash later removed the piezo system when he no longer needed the acoustic function. The guitar then became his main instrument throughout the Velvet Revolver era, taking over from his famous Les Paul known as “Jessica.”

Watch as Slash and Mark examine the guitar’s extensive natural wear, including deep buckle rash that Mark jokes is the result of the “Slash Lab,” rather than the Murphy Lab.

Slash also describes the guitar as light, aggressive-sounding, and particularly “bitey” without having too much high end. After years of touring and performances with Velvet Revolver, this Les Paul certainly has the scars and stories to prove that it was one of the hardest-working guitars in Slash’s incredible guitar collection.
<br />
Did you know one of Slash’s main Velvet Revolver guitars was actually from the first full-production run of the Slash line of signature model Les Paul guitars?<br />
<br />
In this clip from The Collection on Gibson TV, Slash chats with Mark Agnesi about an early-2000s Gibson Les Paul Standard in Tobacco Burst, made by the team at the Custom Shop. Slash explains that it came from the first real run of Slash models, circa 2000 to 2002 (although he is not quite sure).<br />
<br />
The guitar originally featured a piezo pickup in the bridge and a switch that allowed Slash to move quickly to an acoustic-style sound. This gave him a practical alternative to using a double-neck guitar when performing songs that required both electric and acoustic tones.<br />
<br />
Slash later removed the piezo system when he no longer needed the acoustic function. The guitar then became his main instrument throughout the Velvet Revolver era, taking over from his famous Les Paul known as “Jessica.”<br />
<br />
Watch as Slash and Mark examine the guitar’s extensive natural wear, including deep buckle rash that Mark jokes is the result of the “Slash Lab,” rather than the Murphy Lab. <br />
<br />
Slash also describes the guitar as light, aggressive-sounding, and particularly “bitey” without having too much high end. After years of touring and performances with Velvet Revolver, this Les Paul certainly has the scars and stories to prove that it was one of the hardest-working guitars in Slash’s incredible guitar collection.<br />
Ever wondered how to play The Outsider by A Perfect Circle? In this exclusive clip from Riff Lords, Billy Howerdel breaks down one of the trickiest songs in his live set, walking through every section of the track and explaining exactly why it’s such a difficult song to pull off on stage.

The Outsider, released as a single from Thirteenth Step, the second A Perfect Circle album, is actually played using two different guitars in two different tunings. Billy’s main guitar sits in C sharp standard, while the second is an all-open B guitar, tuned low B, F sharp, mid B, mid B, high B, high B, which he plays with a slide. This is why it’s so hard to play! You need two guitars.

However, Billy breaks down the main riffs for you in this The Outsider guitar lesson, playing the song at full speed, then slowing it down and stripping the effects away so you can hear exactly what’s happening. He demonstrates the clean intro, starting with the pointer finger on the seventh fret of the A string and spreading out into a 7 9 9 shape, along with the flourishes and slides he adds on top. He then breaks down the riff section, 0 3 5, 0 3 5, and 7 on the A string, played with no pick and using a hammer-on from the third to the fifth fret.

Billy also covers the heavier chorded version of the same riff that arrives halfway through the song, explaining why landing those chords cleanly is far harder than playing the hammer-on version, plus the big bridge riff in E that he thinks of as sitting slightly ahead of the beat, which gives it that push, making the song drive really hard when the heavier section kicks in.

If you’re an A Perfect Circle fan, a Billy Howerdel fan, or simply looking for the ultimate guitar lesson on The Outsider by A Perfect Circle, this is a must-watch lesson from the guitarist who actually wrote the song.
Until now, many of our talented craftspeople have remained behind the scenes, helping to create the Gibson instruments heard on countless hit recordings and stages around the world. From our longest-serving employee to individuals who spearheaded innovations in product development, and other key figures in the Gibson team, Backstage Heroes tells the amazing stories of the people who make your dream Gibson guitars a reality.

In this first episode, we are proud to introduce Kathy Kelly. For more than 50 years, Kathy has helped shape Gibson guitars from within the finishing department at the Gibson craftory in Nashville. This is her story. It began at Gibson in 1975, shortly after Gibson relocated from Kalamazoo, Michigan, to Nashville, Tennessee. First, Kathy was a scuff sander, but she eventually became a member of the finishing department, helping to bring thousands of Gibson guitars to life over the decades—including yours.

Kathy shares fond memories of when Gibson first moved to Nashville with just 50 employees, reveals her thoughts on how the company has evolved over time, and explains why the connection between Gibson and its people means so much to her. From seeing the impact Gibson has had on Music City to reflecting on the moment she was honored with a beautiful Gibson Custom Dove acoustic in recognition of 50 years of service, Kathy’s story is a reminder that the people behind the guitars are the heart and soul of Gibson, and what makes Gibson so special.

The lost Type O Negative documentary, ft. Kenny Hickey

This is the untold history of Type O Negative, told by guitarist and founding member Kenny Hickey.

Originally appearing on Metal and Monsters and now restored in 4K, this rare interview gives fans an intimate look at the rise, struggles, and lasting legacy of Type O Negative from one of the musicians who lived it, the iconic Kenny Hickey.

Watch as Kenny Hickey provides a complete history of Type O Negative, looking back on growing up in Brooklyn, discovering KISS, horror movies, and Black Sabbath, and how hearing the opening notes of “Black Sabbath” changed his idea of heavy music forever.

He also shares the story of his first meeting with Peter Steele as a teenager, years before he would go on to play alongside him in Type O Negative. Kenny remembers the band’s early days, their chaotic first shows, the impact of their debut album Slow, Deep and Hard, and the move towards the darker, more melodic sound that would come to define them.

Kenny also tells the story of Type O Negative’s difficult road to success. From playing small clubs across America to opening for Nine Inch Nails and having things thrown at them every night, he explains how the band struggled to find their place before a tour with Mötley Crüe helped change everything.

He looks back at the rise of the songs “Christian Woman” and “Black No. 1,” the impact of Headbangers Ball and Beavis and Butt-Head, and how his own voice became the perfect contrast to Peter Steele’s deep baritone.

But the history of Type O Negative also includes darker times. Kenny speaks openly about tension within the band, addiction, the October Rust era, the deeply personal themes that followed, and the difficult process of making later Type O Negative albums.

Kenny also remembers Type O Negative’s final show in 2009, the shock of losing Peter Steele, and how his death changed Kenny’s desire to keep “chasing the ghost.”

Finally, he reflects on the legacy of Type O Negative, why new generations continue to discover the band, what he misses most about playing music with his friends, and why honesty remains at the heart of the music he wants to leave behind.

For Type O Negative fans, Kenny Hickey fans, and anyone interested in the real story behind one of heavy music’s most unique bands, this restored interview offers a rare and unfiltered history of Type O Negative from the guitarist who was there.

Ever wondered how to play “Over the Wall” by Testament? In this exclusive clip from Riff Lords, Eric Peterson shows you exactly how he plays the song, breaking down the main opening riff, the verse riff, and the guitar parts that make “Over the Wall” such a classic Testament track.

In this “Over the Wall” guitar lesson, Eric first plays the riff at full speed before slowing it down so you can follow along and actually learn how to play the song exactly how he wrote it, including the techniques he uses to get that iconic sound. He shows you the opening single-note parts, the pull-offs, and how to move through each section of the riff and tie them all together.

Eric also breaks down the fast bar chord section and explains why muting is so important. He reveals how he thinks of his right hand like a drummer, using his picking hand almost like a drum roll to make the riff sound tight and precise.

You’ll also learn how the two guitars in Testament work together. Instead of always playing the same thing, each guitar can play a different part to make the song sound bigger and more melodic, which is a signature move for the band Testament.

Eric then shows you the galloping and chugging techniques that have been part of Testament’s sound since their first record. He explains how he plays on the open E string while adding other chords and half-step movements to create the verse riff in “Over the Wall.”

If you’re a Testament fan, an Eric Peterson fan, or simply looking for a guitar lesson on how to play “Over the Wall,” this is a must-watch from the guitarist who wrote it.

In this compilation from the Joe Bonamassa episode of Gibson TV’s The Collection, Mark Agnesi visits Nerdville East to check out five incredible vintage Les Paul™ guitars and hear the stories behind them.

Joe starts with “Lazarus,” a 1959 Gibson Les Paul Standard that spent more than 50 years hidden underneath candy apple red paint. After spotting the original parts and key details underneath the finish, Joe realized he had found an original 1959 Les Paul. The guitar was restored to its Sunburst finish and brought back to life.

Next up is “Johnny B,” a late-1960 Gibson Les Paul Standard that still has its former owner’s name attached to the body. Joe talks about why he loves guitars with names on them, the slim 1960 neck profile, and why this road-worn Les Paul has become such a dependable touring guitar.

Joe then shows Mark “The Ragin’ Cajun,” a 1960 Gibson Les Paul Standard he found in New Orleans. After buying it, Joe and Mike Hickey discovered a photo of the exact guitar in a vintage guitar book. When they removed the replacement pickup covers, they found the original double-white Patent Applied For pickups underneath. Joe went on to play the guitar at every show for three years.

We also get a closer look at “Lorelei,” a 1959 Gibson Les Paul Standard previously owned by Craig Chaquico of Jefferson Starship. Joe shares the story behind the guitar, its faded finish, rock ’n’ roll history, and distinctive zebra and double-white pickups.

Finally, Joe brings out a 1958 Gibson Les Paul Custom that inspired his Epiphone signature model. He explains the changes that made it a better playing guitar, including a refret and a flipped pickup magnet, before pointing out one of its coolest details: original Epiphone tuners with altered logos.

From refinished Bursts to iconic guitars with incredible stories, Joe Bonamassa shows Mark Agnesi five of his favorite Les Paul guitars from Nerdville East.

If you love vintage Gibson guitars, rare Les Pauls, and incredible guitar stories, this compilation from The Collection is one you don’t want to miss.
<br />
Next up is “Johnny B,” a late-1960 Gibson Les Paul Standard that still has its former owner’s name attached to the body. Joe talks about why he loves guitars with names on them, the slim 1960 neck profile, and why this road-worn Les Paul has become such a dependable touring guitar.<br />
<br />
Joe went on to play the guitar at every show for three years.<br />
<br />
We also get a closer look at “Lorelei,” a 1959 Gibson Les Paul Standard previously owned by Craig Chaquico of Jefferson Starship. Joe shares the story behind the guitar, its faded finish, rock ’n’ roll history, and distinctive zebra and double-white pickups.<br />
<br />
Finally, Joe brings out a 1958 Gibson Les Paul Custom that inspired his Epiphone signature model. He explains the changes that made it a better playing guitar, including a refret and a flipped pickup magnet, before pointing out one of its coolest details: original Epiphone tuners with altered logos.<br />
<br />
From refinished Bursts to iconic guitars with incredible stories, Joe Bonamassa shows Mark Agnesi five of his favorite Les Paul guitars from Nerdville East.<br />
<br />
If you love vintage Gibson guitars, rare Les Pauls, and incredible guitar stories, this compilation from The Collection is one you don’t want to miss.<br />
<br />

Did you know Slash once had a Gibson Firebird™ signature model? Did you grab one of these rare birds?

In this exclusive clip from Gibson TV’s The Collection, Slash is with Mark Agnesi to take a closer look at one of the earliest prototypes from his Gibson Firebird signature project: Prototype #2.

While Slash has always loved vintage Firebirds, he explains why the traditional Firebird pickups didn’t always work for him in a live setting. Looking for a guitar that could deliver the feel and look of a classic Firebird while better fitting his stage rig, Slash worked with Gibson to develop a modified version featuring Seymour Duncan pickups and his preferred neck profile.

Watch as Slash shares the origins of the project, revealing how performing material from Chinese Democracy inspired him to explore a different sound on stage and how that search for a new sound resulted in a unique Firebird design, combining classic Firebird styling with one major modification in the form of full-size humbucker pickups.

Along the way, Slash discusses the differences between studio and live guitars, why he loves the Gibson Firebird, how Firebirds remain an important part of his incredible guitar collection, and how this signature model evolved from a simple touring idea into a full Gibson Custom project with the team at Gibson Custom. This is a really cool look at one of the lesser-known guitars in Slash’s collection and one of the lesser-known Slash signature models, too.
